The Municipality
Levski municipality is located on a territory of 414 sq. m. in the central part of the Danube plain (in the Touchenishko-Dolnoosamski region) and it is a constituent part of Pleven County. It is bounded to the north by the municipalities Nikopol and Belene, to the south – by Letnitza, to the east – by Svishtov and Pavlikeni, and to the west – by Pordim municipality. Municipal center is town of Levski. The terrain in the municipality is predominantly flat. The climate is moderate continental, favorable for grain and industrial crops and vegetable- and fruit-growing.
Historical monuments of national significance were discovered near the villages of Malchika, Izgrev and Strejerovo. The tumulus 3 km from the village of Malchika is known for one of the earliest Latin inscriptions on the sacrificial altar dating from the 6th century BC. The ancient necropolis, the tumuli in the village of Izgrev and the rock in the Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) locality northwest of the village of Stezherovo are also listed as finds of national significance.
The areas alongside the Osam River banks are very interesting. The places feature diverse flora and fauna. They are the natural habitat of waterfowl and migratory birds. The old riverbed is very well preserved on the land of the village of Balgarene.
The District
Pleven Region encompasses the central part of the Danube Plain and a section of the fore-Balkan Mountains. It is bounded by the regions of Vratza, Lovech and Veliko Tarnovo and north by the Danube River.
Pleven Region is a well-developed agricultural region. There are deposits of natural oil and gas near the town of Dolni Dubnik and the village of Gigen. The most important water resources in the region are the Danube River and its tributaries, the Iskar, the Vit and the Osam rivers. The region provides excellent conditions for ecotourism and balneology.
