Carcassonne is a fortified French town, in the Aude department. The town is located 90 kilometres, about an hour drive, south-east of Toulouse. It stands in the gap between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central. Carcassonne is at the crossroads of two major traffic roads dating back to the most ancient times, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and from the Massif Central to Spain, skirting the Pyrenees.
From the Bastide Saint-Louis to the medieval walled City, Carcassonne has inherited 2,000 years of history and offers a wealth of monuments to visit and discover. In 1996, Unesco added the Canal du Midi to its list of "World Heritage" sites. In 1997, the Cité de Carcassonne in turn was awarded this distinction.
The town is divided into two quite separate parts. The Cité occupies a plateau on the right bank of the Aude. The Bastide Saint-Louis lies on the left bank.
Carcassonne is part of the triangle formed by Toulouse, Montpellier & Barcelona, which provides a host of tourist attractions including the famous vineyards of the Languedoc, and benefits from an exceptional sun drenched Mediterranean climate, just 60 kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The city is easily accessible, with direct flights from UK and Ireland to Carcassonne airport with many budget airlines.
