Crotone is a very modern southern Italian town with a business and tourism centre; however once upon a time it was a major reference point of Magna Graecia history and culture. Situated on a low promontory on the Ionian Sea, between the rivers Neto and Tacina, a short distance north of Capo Colonna, it is now a small, modern city. The harbor in Crotone is used by fishermen and Mediterranean yachtsman alike. Anyone that has ventured into this harbor will know that it is surrounded by long, easy beaches that stretch-out on either side of the town itself. Even in the bustling cosmopolitan town you still have some interesting architectural works, including the ruins of two medieval castles and their surrounding fortifications. We know the Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, a proponent of autocratic, elitist rule, came to Crotone in about 530 BC and established a school here with many students. Capo Colonna A worthwhile excursion from Crotone is to the famed column at Capo Colonna on Calabria's extreme eastern point, for which you have to drive or walk 11 km along the coast. The column is a solitary remnant of a vast structure which served as the temple for all the Greeks in Calabria.
Capo Rizzuto Riserva Naturale Marina "Capo Rizzuto" covers an area of about 14,721 hectares and extends itself for 40 km of coast. The Protected Marine Area consists of eight promontories: the first on
