Further information on Ponta do Sol. . .
This town, Ponta do Sol or, translated literally, Sun Point, gets its name from a rocky outcrop that goes down into the sea and reflects the sun’s rays. It is situated on the west coast of the island about 25 km from Funchal.
This municipality, with its excellent seaside location, is considered the island’s warmest area, where the sun shines for longest.
The fertile soil has always been used for the so-called rich crops. In the time of the first settlers, it was one of the busiest sugar cane growing centres.
Not far from Ponta do Sol is the village of Madalena do Mar, known for its traditional fishermen’s district and its lovely promenade by the beach running from one end of the village to the other.
